Incidents in confined spaces are rare, yet they have the chance to be the deadliest. This generally takes place as a result of hazards being overlooked or misunderstood. Every project site needs a confined space competent person with essential skills and understanding to spot confined space dangers, address unsafe working conditions, and have the authority to close the job site until hazards are fixed. The objective of confined space competent training is to teach individuals the best techniques and procedures for identifying and eradicating confined space risks that are both present and potentially dangerous.
Governing regulations
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. (OSHA). Through the implementation of regulations that are published in the Code of Federal Regulations, OSHA, an organization of the U.S. Department of Labor, is responsible for enforcing the safety and health conditions of workers. The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, contains the OSHA standards. Part 1910 is designated for basic industry standards. In addition to the topics covered in 1926.32(f), “Competent person,” this training also includes 29 CFR 1910.146, “Permit-required Confined Spaces Standard.”
What is a Confined Space?
According to OSHA, a confined space is any space that is
- spacious enough and configured in such a way that an employee can physically enter and carry out assigned tasks,
- has few or restricted entries or leave options, and
- is not intended for continuous employee presence.
The Importance Of Confined Space Competent Person Training
According to the regulations, anyone who is assigned to work in confined spaces must be considered a competent person. Depending on the need, situation, and availability, there could be one or more supervisors in a workplace. Each supervisor is expected to have in-depth knowledge and skill, as well as an understanding of current regulations, training protocols, and procedures for getting confined space permits.
The OSHA Confined Space Competent Person training outlines all appropriate work settings and security protocols. The training also covers the basic understanding of various dangerous conditions and qualifies the individuals to become competent persons. The training usually includes-
- A hands-on demonstration and real-world practices
- For the purpose of use at a working site, a training booklet with detailed notes
- Certification of completion.
Ideal Candidates For The Training
Regardless of industry, anyone who apparently works in limited areas and wants to enhance their skills should take this training. Having a competent certificate adds professional value to the positions like leaders, managers, supervisors, health and safety managers, business owners, etc. In addition, anyone who enters the restricted area as an assistant, attendant, or helper must undergo training to ensure their safety while they are under such hazardous working conditions.
Conclusion
In accordance with 29 CFR 1910.146, employers are responsible for new staff training. Before being given tasks that can expose them to hazards and risks associated with confined spaces, they must complete Confined Space Competent Person training. Safety training must be conducted both at the beginning and after any operational changes in the activity zone. Getting training is also important when procedure deviations take place to ensure compliance with OSHA confined space training guidelines. This restricted space training course meets these standards.
